Evolutions
(2013)
8-part tuba/euphonium ensemble
Duration: c. 10 minutes
Inspired by the works of John Adams and his self-described 'post-minimalist' style, "Evolutions" was a major experiment for me as a composer. I had never attempted anything in this style before, and was a little unsure of where to even begin. Using common elements of minimalism and post-minimalism, I attempted to create my own version of the "organic aural evolution" that I found so fascinating with the works of Adams (and others)—to create my own aural daydream. A three-note repeating pattern acts a sort of "musical DNA" from which the rest of the piece grows, while remaining a constant thread of connection through the various sections. * Finalist for the Harvey G. Phillips Award for Excellence in Composition, ITEC 2014. Recording: Evolutions (Carnegie VIII) Publisher: Cimarron Music |
