First Flight
|
First Flight was my first formal composition. At the end of my first undergraduate semester, I was in high spirits from being so immersed in the college music experience—as well as the month-long holiday vacation. After finishing my last final exam, I went home and began to write this piece. It took about two days to complete—it practically wrote itself. Originally I had envisioned the title as a reference to the first manned flight by the Wright brothers, but during a masterclass visit, composer Eric Ewazen (Julliard) pointed out that it was perhaps also an appropriate title for the "first flight" of a young composer.
It's a brisk and exciting piece that never lets up until the final note.
