Goldberg's Machine (But What Does It Do?)
(2015)

A "bouncy" and slightly cartoonish piece, "Goldberg's Machine" is a challenging workout for tuba quartet, with probably more meter changes than anything else I've written before it. The title is derived from the famed cartoon machines by artist Rube Goldberg. Constantly moving in new directions, complicated almost beyond comprehension, one wonders, 'But what does it do?' Originally the piece started as a sketch for brass band, but after sitting untouched for years, it was resurrected and put to good use. I had heard the North Texas Euphonium Quartet perform at a regional tuba conference and approached them about writing a new work. Although it wound up being published for tuba quartet, because the ranges in the bottom parts is right at home on tuba, it is still completely playable by four euphoniums. Written for North Texas Euphonium Quartet. Publisher: Cimarron Music |
