Paracosms
(2016)
unaccompanied euphonium
Duration: 8 mins
For unaccompanied euphonium in four movements, Paracosms highlights the many abilities of the euphonium, from the lyrical and technical, to the generally under-explored low register. I chose the title, which refers to a detailed and consistent imaginary world explored over a prolonged period, to give each movement a somewhat programmatic context, with the exception of the first movement (a bit of a tongue-in-cheek jab). In doing so I hoped to create a work that would provide as much interest for the listener as the performer, where many unaccompanied pieces I'm familiar with tend to stray into “weird” aural territories that tend to lose the average concert-goer. The result is a challenging, diverse, and audience-friendly work. I. Obligatory Weirdness II. Night Flight III. From the Depths IV. Wildfire *Finalist for the Harvey G.
