The 'Tomes' series has been one I've come back to over the years since the first (and heavily-revised since) version in 2009. I enjoyed the idea of musical themes appearing across multiple pieces, like character themes in a film series. The third entry, Tomes of Redemption is the capstone to this fantasy film-esque trilogy. I. A Grey King II. Isle of Wights III. Tugarin I've always preferred to leave the programmatic story of the Tomes series vague in order to let the listener imagine their own story, but in order to explain it as I imagine it I've decided to write it down: In the original, Tomes of Hardened Steel, a knight/warrior undertakes a perilous journey to defeat a colossal beast terrorizing the land. Afterwards he is crowned king. In the second installment, Tomes of the Wanderer, the king sends a wanderer knight on an errand to dispatch of a beast haunting a swamp. In the final entry, Tomes of Redemption, we find that the king's rule has slowly been failing and the kingdom sliding into ruin. Their closest allies have gone mysteriously silent and heralds sent to investigate have gone missing. The king decides to take one last quest, and the journey takes them to the island kingdom of their allies. The island is eerily silent and empty, the ruins of the great kingdom evident. As they journey towards the heart of the island, they encounter the ghosts of the kingdom and learn that a great dragon has invaded and entirely wiped them out. The king vows to slay the drake and sets out to find its lair on the island. The dragon is indeed a mighty adversary and their battle is hellacious. Eventually the king himself manages to bring down the dragon, Tugarin, though he is mortally wounded in the struggle. As he dies, you can hear his theme rising, representing his ascension.
