Wyvernfell
|
Wyvern is another name for a dragon*, the title loosely translating to "Fall of the Dragon." The piece is programmatic, the main idea being a knight—represented by the opening theme—confronting a dragon, and the battle that ensues. Extended techniques are made use of in the tubas, with some rather nasty rips and ominous valve rumblings. First premiered by a student quartet at Tennessee Tech University for my junior composition recital.
*You'll find some debate from fantasy aficionados about the subtle differences between dragons, drakes, wyrms, and wyverns.
