It's Monday night, and I'm sitting here reflecting on the previous week at the 2014 ITEC in Bloomington, IN. Although, reflecting isn't really the best way to put it, because I'm still running on the high from the week's activities and it hasn't left my thoughts yet. This was the third ITEC I've gone to, and it was by far the best on all fronts. While I didn't personally perform (thankfully), I had four performances of my music throughout the week which were all well performed and well received.
Getting out there and meeting the people in this large-but-small community is unlike anything else. People that I've been listening to on recordings since I was 12 years old, standing in front of you, walking by, performing on stage, talking to you and congratulating you on your music. Quite surreal.
And more than it just being amazing from my composer's standpoint, it was fantastic as an audience member. The level of musicianship in some of the concerts was truly stunning. The ones that come to mind are David Childs, Pat Sheridan, Steven Mead, and Andreas Hoffmeir.
After a week of tuba, you start to get fatigued and it doesn't matter how good the playing might be, your ears just need a break! I feel nevertheless charged up, energized, and inspired to write some new music now!
